Mother Earth News Fair 2011

It's been a few months since the Mother Earth News Fair. We had a great time and our soap went over extremely well in the bathrooms at the resort and resulted in many folks seeking us out. It was a long weekend with quite a bit of travel and we came home to Bucks County tired and with a lot less soap than we took with us!

If you are within a day or two drive of this Seven Springs PA we encourage you to come out for this years fair. You will learn a great deal about sustainability and homesteading and get to hear some fantastic speakers and attend some good classes. Read more about last years fair on their blog here

PA Renewable Energy Fest 2011

We had a great time meeting new friends and old at the PA Renewable Energy Fest in Kempton PA this past weekend! The weather was a little cooler than normal but the sun was out most of the time and there was a breeze blowing- perfect for the solar and wind energy vendors who were there.

We had our field sink in use and also made our hand soap available at the wash stands adjacent to the restrooms again. We get a lot of great feedback once people actually try our soap and it surely sells itself. We were please to find many people coming back who had tried it last year and needed more. Of course you can always buy it on our website www.washtyme.com and we are also looking for distributors and stores to carry it so please let us know of any opportunities in your area.

We had an email sign up sheet and offered a collection of our soaps as a raffle prize, there were 51 entries and we used a random number generated from Random.org to select the winner. Actually the last 2 entries were entered into our database from emails sent by using the QR code we had on the sheet- and one of those was the winner! Liza Gould we will be in touch via email and figure out how to get you your free gift!

This coming weekend September 24-25th we will be at the Mother Earth News Fair in Seven Springs PA. Andy will be doing a demonstration on Saturday about making biodiesel and how we get the glycerin that our awesome soaps are made from - don't miss it!

New Retail Location- Lumberville General Store!

Antibacterial Soap = BAD

When are you going to throw out all the antibacterial soap in your home? From Natural News:

(NaturalNews) The current mania over putting anti-bacterial chemicals in everything from cleaning wipes and hand soap to detergent and toothpaste has resulted in the widespread contamination of the environment with two related toxins often found in these products -- triclocarban (TCC) and triclosan.

The researchers found TCC has a "strong" tendency to bioaccumulate in fish -- that means the fish take in the substance far faster than their bodies can break it down and eliminate it. Because TCC so strongly bioaccumulates in fish,even minute and seemingly harmless amounts in the water can build up to toxic amounts inside the animals' bodies.

In 2 weeks we will be at Del Val College annual A-Day (short for agriculture day) with specials on our soap and also Bucks Co Freedom Fuel doing demonstrations both Saturday and Sunday showing how we use organic chemistry to turn vegetable oil into biodiesel and our awesome glycerin soap. Spring Website and Product Updates

Wash Tyme is excited to announce updates

to our product line and Website!

Previously we had 2 types of liquid soap- a gel with essential oils and a cleaner with fragrances for scenting. After much thought we have decided to merge them into one Clean & Green Liquid Glycerin Soap as we move towards using more essential oils. The consistency of our new soap formula is more towards the gel consistency- as a concentrated soap you can dilute with water for many cleaning jobs to get even more value! Keep an eye out for new essential oils being added, and remember you can always buy unscented and add your favorites!

Here is our new label which describes the various uses - for those of you familiar with Dr. Bronner's soap we feel ours exceeds it and is even GREENER!

We have also added a 5 gallon size at a Super Value of only .12 per oz! Local Pickup or Delivery within 15 miles of 18944 only due to weight. Visit our updated online store now!

2nd Annual Locavore Event

Last week Wash Tyme participated in the 2nd Annual Locavore event hosted at Superior Woodcraft in Doylestown. What is a locavore event you may ask? Its a movement of people that are interested in buying locally, sustainably produced products especially food items and building a community. There were local vendors present who brought samples of their breads, wines, chocolates, beers, raw chips, coffee, ice cream, and of course our soap was available to wash up with!

The event was held in the Superior Woodcraft showroom and work area which provided a really cool setting to show off their custom cabinetry. There was a lot of networking of local business professionals courtesy of the cooperation of the Doylestown Business and Community Alliance and State Senator Chuck McIlhinney attended along with State Rep Quinn and representative of US Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick. We made a lot of good contacts and it is always provides a welcome recharge to be a part of events like this that show us what a great community we have here in Bucks County.

Winter Updates

Wash Tyme has been busy this winter! We have fabulous new labels for our liquid soap/gel bodywash and continue to look at other essential oils to add- if you have any suggestions please contact us through the website!

We participated in The Healthy Diva Festival at Pennridge High School last weekend, here are a few photos. It was great connecting with other vendors and sharing ideas.

We are excited about this year and looking forward to spring! We will do doing 2 big shows in September, and also plan on attending DelVal College A-Day again this April. Our website is due for a makeover which hopefully will happen soon.

4th Annual Green Community Festival

Last Saturday both Wash Tyme and Bucks County Freedom Fuel participated in the 4th Annual Green Community Festival in Liberty Park, Peapack NJ. It was a beautiful day and there was good music and lots of things to see and learn especially for kids. The theme was "Choice" this year and there were recycling stations set up for batteries, electronics, tennis shoes and bicycles.

Andy did a demonstration for a few interested folks about biodiesel and actually making a small 1 liter batch of fuel right before their eyes using veggie oil, alcohol, and caustic.

It was a little chilly but thankfully the sun was out most of the day!

Pennypack Farm Fall Festival

We enjoyed a beautiful weather day last Saturday at Pennypack Farm! The crowd and other vendors were great also.

Plenty of fresh treats and tomato pie were available, and there was a hayride and activities for kids.

There was music for all ages

We had our handwash station setup which many folks took advantage of to clean up and see how great our soap is. Removes grease in cold water and leaves your skin feeling wonderful.

New Happenings!

End of summer and start of autumn is always a busy time for Wash Tyme! There are many festivals and fairs this time of year. 2 weekends ago we had a booth at the PA Renewable Energy Festival and did very well. We had a booth just adjacent to the restrooms and put our soap there- as soon as folks try it they discover how nice it feels on your skin, when they find out it removes grease in cold water they are even more amazed! Of course for fairs where there are no bathrooms we also have our new portable field sink to try our soap on the spot!

Last weekend we headed out to western Pennsylvania to check out the 1st Mother Earth News Fair. Here is a brief recap:

"Awesome! That pretty much sums up the response from most of the folks who attended our first MOTHER EARTH NEWS FAIR, held at the beautiful Seven Springs resort southeast of Pittsburgh. It was a different kind of energy we generated as the Fair brought together more than 9,000 people to participate in nearly 200 workshops, countless demonstrations on cheese making, beekeeping, building electric and wood-burning cars, seed saving, preserving and pickling, bread baking, meat processing, choosing solar power … the list goes on and on. Many sessions were standing room only and organizers had to relocate some sessions because of the large audiences the topics were drawing."

Needless to say we will be participating next year as long as our schedule allows. We drove out on 100% locally produced biodiesel and camped both nights.

Over the next 4-5 weeks we have a few local events so stay tuned and hope to see you out at one!

Jim Thorpe Earth Day 2010

Back in April we partcipated in the Earth Day Festival in scenic Jim Thorpe PA. The weather was great and we were a little too close to the stage but we had a great time. We had breakfast at the Albright Mansion which serves terrific food and has quite a tea selection.

Fox Chase Farm to Table Day

On June 5th we participated in the Farm to Table Day event at Fox Chase Farm. The Farm to Table Day was established as a way to help educate the community about all the facets of agriculture and help them better understand the origins of our food supply and the career and educational opportunities available to them through agriculture, even in urban areas.

We educated folks on how we make biodiesel and our glycerin soap from recycling used cooking oil. The weather was great!

We are interested to know if you like the music, some folks have commented that they do not like music playing unless they start it.

We have a grab bag for discontinued scents at a terrific value of $2.50 per bar- get em while supplies last!

Also our gardeners soap is on the website- it has our glycerin based from recycled cooking oil and we also added beeswax, pumice, and cucumber melon scent. It really lathers up nice and cleans the dirtiest hands while still being gentle on your skin. While supplies last!

Delaware Valley College Agricultural Day

Or A-Day as it is known locally, actually is Friday through Sunday. It's an annual fundraiser and part science fair, part livestock show, and part folk festival. We were selling plenty of soap and talking to lots of people who were interested in what we are doing with recycling used cooking oil into biodiesel and our handmade glycerin soap! It was a tiring weekend for us but worth it.

What is Soap and Why is Ours Better?

Soap is the oldest cleaner around, dating back to 2800 BC in Ancient Babylon. It is created by a chemical reaction between oils, water and lye. Although lye is used to make soap there is no lye left after saponification (the chemical reaction that makes soap) is complete. Different oils can be used- both plant and animal- which yields soap with different properties.

Soaps can be made with either lye (NAOH) or potassium hydroxide (KOH). We make our bar soap with lye and liquid soap with KOH.

Most commercial soaps sold today are made with detergents (a petroleum based product- yuck!) and stripped of glycerin which is a natural by-product, so the glycerin can be sold and put in lotions and other products. So once again we see corporate commercialization put profit ahead of whats best for the consumer! That is why people often complain of dry skin and the need to purchase additional lotions, as well as having reactions from the various chemicals that are used like alkali, DEA, and isopropyl alcohol.

Handmade soaps have been around for a long time, and their popularity is growing due to consumers looking for products that are not only good for their bodies, but good for the environment. There is plenty of evidence about the healing properties of handmade soap, from helping conditions like eczema or psoriasis as well as people with sensitive or hypoallergenic skin.

Glycerin is a compound derived from oils that absorbs water from the air and is very helpful in keeping skin soft & healthy. Since skin is our largest organ at approximately 20 ft2 of the human body you can reap enormous health benefits by keeping it nourished.

Our glycerin soaps are unlike others in that they are a differing shade of brown. This is because our glycerin comes as the by-product of making biodiesel which is a biodegradeable diesel fuel made from vegetable oil. We add natural ingrediants such as shea butter, olive oil & beeswax and scents to produce bars that smell good, lather well, are good for your skin, and clean exceptionally well. Best of all they are made from a carbon-neutral recycled, mostly vegan natural product!

Our soaps are a little softer than most because we add no chemical hardeners and contain more glycerin than a typical store-bought glycerin soap. For best value you should use a soap dish that allows the bars to dry between uses. For shower use we recommend that you do not keep bars in the shower but on a dish outside the shower.

Our liquid soap is an amazing degreaser that is very mild to your skin with no toxic odors! It can be used for everthing from kitchen cleaning to use as shampoo. It will take grease off your hands in cold water.

Earth Day 2009

We had 2 tables at Bucks County Community College in Newtown PA for Earth Day. We sold a bunch of soap and are donating profits to the Environmental Club. We spoke with a lot of students who were very interested in what we are doing. Erin Maher who runs the cafeteria treated us to Moroccan pork loin and lentils for lunch which was really good.

Afterwards we stopped over at nearby George School to get a tour of their garden from Joe Ducati who heads up their culinary department. His wife Kate takes care of the garden with student help, the kids are really into it and they have a nice garden. I met Joe last year when calling around to find oil sources and he connected me with Culinart which is the company he works for. They provide dining services for schools like BCCC and George School and also for corporate centers and are very committed to sustainability and local food sourcing. Joe and Kate are terrific folks and we're blessed to have met them.

Doylestown Hospital Green Fair

Today Dorinda, Abby, & Andy took part in a Green Fair at Doylestown Hospital. It was for vendors of the hospital to showcase their 'green' side. Diane Pennington invited us after a meeting with Andy last week. Bucks County Freedom Fuel will be partnering with the hospital to recycle their used cooking oil to make biodiesel and Wash Tyme uses the vegetable glycerol left over from that process.

It was open to hospital employees and volunteers from 12-2pm. We estimate there were 150-200 people that came through. We had a table right up front when you came in and got very positive response. We gave away small soap samples, answered questions, and got some good exposure for our soap and website. It was a lot of fun!
